I think the documentation team at RSI deserves a well earned pat on
the back, too. I certainly appreciate their efforts. I have found
the new online help system a breath of fresh air. It's nice to have
everything in one place and I **really** like the links to the
KEYWORDS, SEE ALSO, etc. at the top of each reference page where they
belong. The documentation of VERSION HISTORY which includes the
history of some keywords is going to be wonderfully useful.

The 'book' on image processing has been quite interesting to read,
too. It's written in a manner that makes it just dang useful.

I mistakenly started IDL 5.5 the other day when I meant to start 5.6.
You can imagine my confusion when I tried...

IDL>?file_info

What the heck? Oopsie!

Or, IDL 5.0, 5.1, 5.2, 5.3, 5.4 and 5.5.

Craig

I don't really use IDL 4 anymore, but old () habits die hard.

I think Craig will still need this for IDL 4.0.

Cheers,

I also applaud the addition of VERSION HISTORY in the documentation -- it is
a real benefit to those of us who need to write software to work on
different IDL versions.

On a somewhat related note, I had a recent need to determine the release
dates of the new IDL versions, to help decide what should be the minimum
IDL version our software package should (guarantee) support. By looking
at the first discussion of the version in the comp.lang.idl-pvwave archives,
I came up with the following table. --Wayne Landsman

V5.6 November 2002
V5.5 September 2001
V5.4 December 2000
V5.3 January 2000
V5.2 December 1998
V5.1 May 1998
V5.0 June 1997
