Hey Rick,
Thanks, as always, for the quick and accurate IDL Guru response!
And you caught me, I was writing this question on behalf of my former
boss and the guy who took over my old position. (I still linger here
on the newsgroup, although much less frequently now.) While I'm not
programming in IDL all day, every day anymore, I still use it whenever
I can come up with a decent excuse. (This current one being the new
version and I acquired DICOM files of my sister's mri brain scan. I
just couldn't resist... and my previous theory that she was an airhead
was apparently inaccurate!)
I guess you can take IDL out of the job requirements, but you can't
take IDL out of me.... or something clever like that. :) Please don't
groan too much, but I'm working almost completely with ESRI products
(don't blacklist me newsgroup... they offered me way too much money!),
VBA, and ArcObjects now. Although now that IDL supports shapefiles
(display only??) maybe I can put it back in my performance plan!!
have fun,
dave

The final is out here in the US, but not available for download yet. They
say they are shipping to current customers now, but last year it took 4+
weeks until we final got it at our lab. Anyway, there is hope for your HDF5
efforts to begin shortly.

Hey Dave,
I have been told that "soon" means soonish. :)
RSI has assured me that they are working on support for writing HDF5
files and that effort would be directed towards this project after 6.1
shipped and the dust settled a bit.
Now plans do change but I would hope that a final version would be
released before the end of the year.
Cross your fingers.

P.S. I thought you left the world of IDL ;)
