has Canny-Deriche code in C for non-commercial use only.

Have you considered Sethian's level set methods?
http://math.berkeley.edu/~sethian/level_set.small.html

In your context the idea is to propagate a boundary outwards from a
starting point in a way that moves quickly thru similar points and slows
down when disimilar points are encountered.
