Thanks to all who wrote.

By using a combination of ideas, I've managed to get what I needed.

What I do is to split a long plot up into a FOR loop, with each loop
plotting a subarray of my data.
This suits my type of data quite well, since I need to plot a lot of graphs
on top of each other.
Between loop executions, I use a modified version of Mark Hadfield's YIELD
procedure, to test for widget events and to stop the plotting if desired.
