For me yes but I don't think for Microsoft

No, I'd say it's par for the course.
Microsoft go out of their way to make life "easier" for the user by hiding all
the configuration from the user. This is really nice when everything works, but
when it doesn't you have no idea where the information you need has been
hidden. Documenting where it's hidden would only confuse the user, so Microsoft
don't do that.
Unfortunately, Linux is rapidly moving in the same direction. Progress...

Well, I've taken everything off my computer, except for
my installation of IDL 6.4 and IDL 7.0. Then, I removed
my IDL 7.0 installation and reinstalled it. Now nothing
whatsoever happens when I click on a *.pro file. If I
right click and choose open "Open with IDL", still nothing.
If I right click and choose "Open With...", I get a list, one
of which is "IDL File Open Helper". If I choose this then
IDL 7 will start up, and the file will be loaded.
Does this all seem a little strange to you? Even for Microsoft?
Cheers,
David
P.S. OK, I found a "Folder Options" thingamajig in the
Control Panel folder. Associating the *.PRO file there
with the "IDL File Open Helper" allows me to click on
a *.pro file and get the IDL 7 Workbench to open. Sheesh,
what a waste of a day...

I've fished through the registry and removed any and all
keys referring to IDL 6.0 through 6.3. Now when I click on
a *.pro file the computer just looks at me with a sullen
expression on its face. I guess that's progress. At least
I'm used to it, with teenagers in the house.
Cheers,
David

Hi,
just a though...: do you have any reference to IDL 6.0 in your Windows
"environment variable path"?
It reminds me of MS Word asking for ArcGIS CD each time I was opening MS
Word help!! ... feeding the beast with the CD resolved the problem once
and for all (I hope)!
