Folks,

I just finished refurbishing an old program named
WindowImage, which is used to "window-level" or
adjust the contrast of an 2D image. The user can
move a cursor in the image window vertically to set
the width of the "window", and horizontally to set
the "level" of the "window."

http://www.dfanning.com/programs/windowimage.pro

This is the sort of thing I have in mind when I
say new graphics tools like this will be "impossible
to build" for mere mortals. In fact, I think it
probably can't be done.

But, rather than testing the claim myself, I thought
it might be more fun to just MAKE the claim and see
if anyone (or everyone!) could prove me wrong. :-)

Take as long as you like. I re-wrote this program
essentially from scratch in about 4-5 hours
this morning from "parts" that were laying around,
some of which had to be modified to get the color
bar to do what I wanted it to do.

Happy programming!

Cheers,

David

OK, Paulo, I knew I could count on you. I'll
wait patiently then for enlightenment. I can't get to
it for weeks either. :-)

Cheers,

David

P.S. Let's just say I only write longer answers late
in the day when my eyes are crossed and my brain is
fried. :-)

I fully intend to look into this. But I have been impossibly busy this
week, so I have only been able to write quick answers like this one.

You can't believe with what trepidation I looked at
the newsgroup the day after my challenge. I fully
expected 10 people to have solved the challenge
and confirmed the error of my ways. But, three days
later, and still not a word from anyone.

Now I can't decide if the prize (whatever it was--
I normally give a hug and a kiss, but that probably
wouldn't do in this situation) was too meager for such
a piddly amount of effort or if this is truly
impossible with the IDL 8 graphics.

I realize I'm the only one here without a job, but
still...

Shoot. I may have to look into this myself. :-(

Cheers,

David
