I tried the same way and tried to make fruitful the discussion for me.
I'm not able to run ms2gt to get Italy subset in Universal Transverse
Mercator, Zone 32 Northing.
I work with MOD02HKM .
I tried to write different .gdp files, so I report one example of .gpd
file and relative error:

Grid Height: 2583

;MS2GT ERROR MESSAGE
get_field_keyval: <Map Reference Latitude> not found
mapx: Map Reference Latitude is a required field
Map: No such file or directory
init_mapx: error reading map projection parameters file
init_grid: error reading grid parameters definition file

Any suggestion can illuminate me, because I feel 'greatly frustrated
with GPD files'
to mention D. Fanning when he was first started working with NSIDC
tools.
