From speaking with the tech reps at RSI, it sounds as if the problem
was a lack of a dynamic linking standard for Linux. I was told that
callable IDL and dynamic linking will be supported when a mainstream
ELF distribution is available.

I believe Caldera has announced a port of FlexLM, which is the IDL
licence manager. I don't know it's status.
