I am trying to help a user who is trying to read a large (6 GB ) FITS file and encountering the error

READU: Error encountered reading from file. Unit: 100, File: estt.fits

He is running 64 bit IDL 7.1.1 under Windows. I have a specific and a more general question:

Specific: Does anyone know if there was a problem with READU under Windows in IDL 7.1.1? I vaguely remember a bug where IDL was not taking advantage of its 64 bit capability in file addressing. (I have no problems reading the file under Linux in V7.1.1 or V8.3)

More General: Is there any way that the above error message could be due to programmer error? If one was trying to read too many bytes then one would get an "End of file encountered" error. Otherwise, a binary read is just streaming bytes into an array, without any interpretation, and I cannot think of any way a program could trigger this error. Thanks, --Wayne
