Hello Everyone,

I am trying to get IDL to run on my Mac OSX (El Capitan). Unfortunately, attempting to start the IDL command line results in an error (see below):

==98977==ERROR: AddressSanitizer: heap-buffer-overflow on address 0x621000237500 at pc 0x000101f8d4cd bp 0x7fff5fbfa910 sp 0x7fff5fbfa0d0
WRITE of size 24932 at 0x621000237500 thread T0

Can someone please shed some light on how to resolve this?

Please let me know what additional information is required how I can gather it.

Thank You,
Sudharshan Saranathan

Your best bet would be to contact technical support for help on this. Their email is support@harris.com for North America or supporteu@harris.com for the rest of the world.

That is a very strange error though. What version of IDL are you using and which installer did you use to install IDL? There are two: a OSX native installer GUI application and a UNIX style installer which is run from a terminal interface.

This doesn't help the OP, but it's still an interesting (and short) read:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AddressSanitizer

In particular the sentence:
"On average, the [AddressSantizer] instrumentation increases processing
time by about 73% and memory usage by 340%."

Eesh. Sounds like something you'd want to turn off for number crunching
with IDL....

cheers,

Hello Zachary,

I am trying to run IDL 8.3. I used a .pkg file which installed the language through a GUI. I found nothing quirky during installation.

It's only when I started it that I discovered it wouldn't open. I can't seem to understand if this is a problem with IDL or with the machine.

Either way, thank you for the suggestion! I'll drop a mail to support.

Regards,
Sudharshan

I had something similar under Yosemite, which was related to X11. I had the XQuartz beta version 2.7.9 installed. Reinstalling the XQuartz stable release 2.7.8 helped in my case!
