Well I can't resist. Macs are just slow especially when it comes to
networking. The NCD problem sounds like one we had quite some time ago with
our DECstations (or were they VAXStations?). Anyway, the X window
implementation of the TVREAD capability by DEC was not optimal in the early
days. It took over two minutes to do a TVRD! Then came the next software
release of the x drivers and all was well, full screen TVRDs took only a few
seconds. I guess what I getting at is, don't blame IDL or WAVE for the lack of
speed. The blame lies with the Windows software (very slight possibility it
could be a brain dead hardware design).
If you are doing this over the network, could the speed difference just be due
to network traffic? Is the HP 9000 the server? It would make sense that the
hardware connected directly to the server would be much much faster than any
exported windows.
