We are using HP RISC Xterminals with HP 710/715/720 machines as the main servers.
They handle 4 or 5 Xterminals per work station very well 98% of the time. My
personal machine is an HP envirex Xterminal. Running the IDL xdemo fluid jet
animation it gives 75 to 85 frames per second performance. The local memory
is 10 megabytes. I do not know how this compares to other systems but we
have found the Xterminals to be a very cost effective way to add seats and
seldom find them to be limiting. Of course if every user were a computational
fluid dynamics person trying to run large system simulations, this would not work.
