CALL_EXTERNAL on SGI IRIX [message #1804]

I seem to recall reading somewhere that while CALL_EXTERNAL is not
supported in IDL for IRIX 4.0.5, it is supported in IDL for IRIX 5.1. Can
anyone confirm that this is correct?

My problem is that I have datasets written in HDF/netCDF, and while IDL 3.5
will read HDF or netCDF, it will not read HDF/netCDF. I want to call the
HDF/netCDF library routines from IDL, and I think I need CALL_EXTERNAL to
do this. Currently I have IDL 3.5.1 and IRIX 4.0.5.
