We have received several inquires about our use of Tenon's Xtools for
the upcoming X-Windows/Motif release of IDL for Mac OS X. Here are
answers to some of these questions:
- The Xtools product will be dynamically linked in when we compile so
there will be no need for the user to buy Xtools.
- We chose Xtools because it is a commercial solution that we can count
on to have our bugs fixed and feature requests implemented. With
freeware or shareware we would have to support the X-server ourselves
and that would raise our development costs.
- We have not yet finalized how much we will need to increase the price
for our Macintosh licenses, but it will not be as much as our other Unix
licenses.
- We have not yet tested XDarwin or other X-servers with this release
and do not yet know if they will work with the upcoming IDL X-Windows
release for Mac OS X. We will not be supporting any freeware X-servers
with this release, however.
