Look at the demo source code (on windows the path is
rsi/idl5x/examples/demo/demosrc). It is fairly simple to do with a bulletin
board widget_base. The nice thing about the demo source is that it has the
"tweaks" for all the different platforms.

It has been awhile since I have been on VMS alpha, but David Fanning's
coyote_field gives a constant white background on Windows and Mac (and UNIX
too?).
