Quote from IDL Installing and Licensing Guide IDL 5.5:

p.85-86 Licensing for Alpha Linux
"When you 180-day period expires, you will need to repeat this process
to maintain your RSI software in licensed mode."

So, IDL 5.5 on Linux Alpha is hard-coded to require a new licence
every 6 months!?! We had problems installing, I know, but little did I
realise that the "temporary" license they gave us "until it's sorted
out" was in fact forever.

Licences on our other machines (UNIX) run indefinitely - if one
chooses not to upgrade (ie. pay) one at least keeps the old version,
no RSI support necessary. IDL5.5 is the last release for Linux Alpha
(AFAIK). So I can't upgrade, so I won't be paying for upgrades...
except I will have to, otherwise RSI won't give me support to generate
new licences.

Excuse the rant, but the 5.5 installer just killed my workstation and
now I find out I'm on 180 day licenses until... well, until RSI stop
supporting 5.5, which won't be many multiples of 180 days.

Ciao.
