Actually you can control the colors used. The menu is pretty well
hidden but it is there. Downside is it is set for each DTM. This may
be a new feature:

o load a DEM
o right click DEM - Display Paramter Elevation
o right click DEM - Elevation colors - colors - colors from table

The Elevation Tbale button allows you to specifiy which .dbf file to
use to store the elevation ranges and RGB values. Copy the existing
ELEVATION_COLORS.dbf then edit using Excel or a DBase tool of your
choice to make your own ranges. Other features of MicroDEM may allow
you to manage the table if you don't have another tool.

Off the Help menu is a link to a forum supporting MicroDEM. Lots of
help there if you cannot figure it out.
