Has GIF reading and writing as well as LZW compression for TIFF files been
restored since the Unisys patents have expired? I didn't see any mention
of it after a quick look at the What's New in 6.1 pdf but was under the
impression that this functionality would be added in 6.1 according to:

While I don't plan to use these file formats for creating new files, I
have received TIFF image files w/ LZW compression from collaborators and
it would be nice to be able to read them directly into IDL w/o having to
convert them with another program first.
