Found it!!!

It was in a file that came with the IDL 6.3 distribution:

.../idl_6.3/resource/X11/lib/X11/app-defaults/Idl

contained the following lines

Idl.graphicsWindowWidth: 640
Idl.graphicsWindowHeight: 512
Idl.graphicsWindow14Screen: True

I commented those lines out and the problem was solved. Thanks Allan
for pointing me in the right direction.
