Looks like my actual question got chopped for some reason last time, so
I'll try again.

I just wanted to know if there was a way of storing the current device
font for resetting later (ie after use of a program that sets it) which
would work when the current font is the 'default'.

I would have hoped that

IDL> device, get_current_font=cf
IDL> font gets changed....
IDL> device,font=cf

would work but it won't if cf is returned as the default ie cf=''
