Wow! That's the first time I've been asked that so directly. Perhaps,
I'll try to tone down a bit. I still do plenty of "mere mortal" things
with IDL and it works very well.

Indeed, there is an intrinsic problem with IDL when trying to transfer
an in-house algorithm to an end-user application. Like every
technology, IDL gets used for things it was never originally designed
to do, and then gets abused for doing such a poor job.

There are a handful of common problems that seem to crop up on the
newsgroup, and interfacing with C++ is certainly one of them. Python
has done it very well, Matlab has sort of done it, but why not IDL?
Surely a good C++ interface would speed up development at Boulder too.
