Check out the system variables !d and !p.

!d.n_colors tells how many colors are in your current color table.
!p.color tells the current default plot color.
!p.background tells the current default background color.

These last two values may be set to whatever available color index
you wish. For example, you could swap them. This lets you reverse
the plot color and background without changing the color table.
