The same thing probably happens on Fedora 8.

I had to install libstdc++.so.5 to get the license manager thing
(ittlicense) to run (which was using an XML extension of some sort which
I guess was linked against the older libstdc++.so.5).

For people using Fedora 8, the relevant command (as root) is:

yum install compat-libstdc++-33

I have to admit I've not even tried running the new DE. But, then, I
only ever run the old DE once and that was an accident - like must
things I don't understand I turned xkill on it immediately without even
trying to see how you exit it 'normally' :).
