I think I've seen this in the/a FAQ somewhere. PV-WAVE bought the source
code from IDL some years back, and since then the two products have diverged
somewhat. PV-WAVE is not an "overlay" for IDL.
I don't know about IDL, but PV-WAVE has partnered with a number of
companies eg. IMSL and MAPLE, which may be what your colleague
referred to. Hard to say without knowing the functionality you are trying to
implement.
