Question:

I'm using IDL to write to a serial port on a VAX/VMS system.
I do this by pretending the port is a file, and write and read data
to this 'file'. Is there any way to tell if the serial port has data
to read back in, if I try to read from the port, and nothing is there,
the computer will hang and then give an error.
