Thank you for the hint. I solved the problem in this way (assuming
that about lays inside !path):

pro about,event
online_help,book=FILE_SEARCH(STRSPLIT(!PATH, PATH_SEP(/SEARCH_PATH),/
EXTRACT) + '/about.{pdf}')
end
