Here are my notes about 8.1 (should be released today?):

extended longitudes and high-resolution shorelines in MAP
GSHHS map database

new methods, better array access syntax for LIST and HASH
::isEmpty, ::count, ::findValue (like WHERE) methods

GRIB read and write
programmatic API (38 GRIB_* routines)
UNIX and Mac OS X only

IDLffVideoWrite class for high-quality video output
mp4 or avi
FFmpeg

event handling in (new) graphics
