I tend not to file bug reports until I've posted here first and read
the replies, as frequently the bug turns out to be mine and not
IDL's. To kBob, as Nigel Wade pointed out, there is no inherent 2GB
limit with gzip (at least not with recent versions). I've had no
trouble gzipping and un-gzipping files > 4GB on the same platform, so
the issue does not seem to be there. The tests I've done point
strongly to some kind of error based on attempting to do indexing of
the bytes in the data stream using a signed long integer, which tops
out at a value of 2^31 - 1. If it turns out that I haven't made some
dumb mistake, I'll file a bug report with ITT-VIS in a few days.

Thanks.
