Yeah, just confirmed it - was lacking a '+' in my export IDL_PATH line
my .bash_profile - didn't have the subdirectories on my path.

It's now accepting the strsplit lines, but not the READFITS - so I've
got to go on a hunt for the NASA IDL library.
