colormap problem in v4.0.1 (yes I read FAQ) [message #4904]

I have upgraded to v4.0.1 on a SunOS 4.1.3 platform and am getting
the "Cannot allocate colormap entry" error. The suggestion in the FAQ
to add "idl.colors: -5" to the .Xdefaults does NOT help (yes, I restarted
X windows). Any suggestions?

I also note that my 4.0.1 installation no longer includes the directory
"notes" which contained the sun.doc spelling out this (and other)
problems.
