In case anyone is interested, I've posted an article that shows how to use Slither ( http://slither4idl.com ) to embed PyMOL ( http://pymol.org ) in an IDL window.

The same technique could be used together with PyOpenGL to do raw open drawing in an IDL window, or, without Slither, to allow a custom dlm to do opengl drawing.
