I did manage to fix this with help from Exelis Tech Support by

sudo -s
. /Applications/exelis/idl82/bin/idl_setup.bash
idl

Then after IDL 8.2 started successfully, I exited from the IDL session, and
then while still in the sudo shell, ran:

idlde

Then I exited out of the idlde session and finally exited out of the sudo
shell.
