Is this using the computer locally or over the network? On which IDL
version?

I use idlde all the time under linux. It is possible for it to run
well, even with many simultaneous users (in that particular case, in
an SLES11SP1 x86_64 system I manage). I still see it broken on some
systems (particularly when using object graphics). It varies a lot
depending on the combination of IDL version, graphics driver, and a
bunch of system libraries. It is not hopeless, but it can be a lot of
work to fix.
