convert byte array [48,1221] to float [message #84931]

I used readfits to read in data and it produced a 48 by 1221 byte array. I tried using
"ieee_to_host, data, IDLTYPE=4"
but I am having no luck converting it to a float array. Help would be appreciated !! Thanks !
