I am the nominal maintainer of the Emacs editing/interactive shell mode called IDLWAVE. It's been a number of years since I've been able to put in even the kind of energy modest necessary to keep it up to date, so I'd be glad to hear from anyone who wants to take over as maintainer. The code was recently refactored to make maintenance easier; see github.com/jdtsmith/idlwave (note the old idlwave dot ORG site was taken over by domain campers touting some shady investments, so disregard it). This should ease a maintainer transition to some degree.
Emacs is a pretty vibrant community right now, and I'd say IDLWAVE would do well as a downloadable package (rather than as part of the core, as it is now). There have been some upstream changes made by the Emacs coders that would need to be back-ported, but I use it still on a semi-daily basis, and things still work well with IDL v8.5. Even the online help system is reasonably well indexed. In any case, if you are interested, get in touch and we can discuss further details.
