There are a number of procedures for reading and writing
images, including 16-bit; examples are TIFF_READ/WRITE,
READ/WRITE_BMP, READ/WRITE_GIF, and similar routines for
PICT, PPM, SRF (Sun raster), and JPEG.

We've had good experiences reading the TIFF and GIF files
in Photoshop for the Sun and for Windows. I would assume
there would be no problems for the Mac version.

I've written a routine called WINDOW_TO_FILE.PRO that writes
the contents of a specified window to a file in either
PICT, GIF, TIFF, or BMP format. You can also optionally
print the window contents. This routine is written for
use on a UNIX system, but it could easily be modified for
use under Mac. At the least, it is an example of saving
images to files in various formats. Zap me an email if
you're interested.
