Try this immediately after starting IDL:

xyouts,0,0,'Hello',/normal
plot,[0],/noerase
xyouts,0,0,'Hello',/normal

On my SGI box, the second 'Hello' is printed significantly larger than
the first. Anyone know why?

(On a Sun box, the size of 'Hello' stays the same).
