I've been playing with it IDL 5.0 Insight for a couple days now on a
very lightly loaded SGI Power Indigo2 with 256MB RAM.
Some observations:
(1) It's slow! When I display an image (716x716 integer), and then pull
down a menu bar, even if I don't select anything in the menu, there is a
noticeable delay while the image is redisplayed (is it doing a CONGRID
every time?). Even redisplaying the plots in example project 1 after a
window resize takes more than 2 seconds.
(2) What's with the fonts? If I choose example project 1, I get the
'Compute Vendor Stock Price Analysis' plots. But the fonts look
terrible.
(3) The double click response on objects is slow. For example, when I
double click on the title in example project 1, there is a delay of
about a second before the title object even indicates that it has been
selected.
(3) Maybe I haven't played with it enough, but I can't figure out how to
easily create a histogram plot from part of an image, e.g.
- display an image
- select an area on the image with a rubber band box
- plot a histogram of the image data values within the box
This is a basic operation for my work.
Any other comments? Personally, I'm not very excited about Insight. I'm
certainly not ready to recommend it to a beginner user.
