This problem has occured for me too. ( This sounds might silly but.. )
If you hit CTRL-BREAK and you don't get a response.. try moving your
mouse to the task bar and clicking on it.. This seems to snap ( at least
in NT ) the system awake and it stops.

Same problem here. I haven't found a work around yet. Let me know if
you get one.
